More than a quarter of U.S. households have either professionally monitored security systems (19%) or non-professional services such as alerts and video storage (7%), according to a new report from Parks Associates.
The firm’s report, entitled “Residential Security Dashboard,” found that the most common tools are video doorbells, smart cameras, and outdoor light fixtures outfitted with a camera. About 35% of U.S. households have at least one smart video device, according to the research.
“Growth opportunities lie in upselling add-on devices, integrating energy and automation platforms, and offering differentiated value through AI [artificial intelligence], privacy-preserving features, and seamless user experiences,” Parks Associate Vice President for Research Jennifer Kent said in a press release.
Other findings from the home security report include:
- 33% of U.S. internet households own a smart camera in various form factors.
- Among the 35% of U.S. internet households who pay for a security service, one in five (21%) are paying for self-monitoring of video devices.
- About 78% of security system owners pay for some form of service. These services include professional monitoring, self-monitoring, video storage and others.
It is a promising field, the report said, with average monthly fees for home security services at $54. Established players are Vivint, Brinks, and ADT, while brands including Roku, Arlo, Wyze, and Eufy are in the mix. Advanced features that are available include video verification and analytics powered by artificial intelligence.
The area is not only of interest to startups or companies trying to transition from the pre-digital age. In April, 2024, T-Mobile introduced an offer to those switching to its fixed wireless 5G Home Internet service that included the Blink Outdoor 4 two-camera system and the Blink Mini Pan-Tilt camera. The carrier said that the products were worth $229.97.
Less than a year earlier — in August, 2023 — regional fiber provider Lumos said that it was offering subscribers in the southeast customized smart home security systems.
