Google has made a few changes to YouTube that arguably create an experience more similar to television than previously has been the case. A new homepage and “channels” are the best examples of the new approach. The new homepage makes it easier to find and follow channels

On the left side of the homepage users can create their own, personal, customizable YouTube Channel line-up. Users can browse recommended channels; customize the homepage feed and link a YouTube account to Google+ and Facebook to see what friends are sharing. YouTube more like TV

The look and feel of the channels has been changed as well. As different uploaders have different goals, YouTube has created new channel templates.. Some partners have even uploaded videos talking about the features, or giving tips on how they’re taking advantage of the new design. YouTube also unveiled an experimental design called “Cosmic Panda” intended to be cleaner and simpler, with a consistent gray background, bigger video thumbnails and a more streamlined watch page.

Of course, it is easy to underestimate the depth of changes that are required to make YouTube or any other online delivery format a major competitor to today’s cable, satellite or telco TV, not to mention rights to show the same sorts of content people expect from those other formats.
