Facebook and Skype Talking Convergence

We could all see this coming, right? Two blue chip Internet brands looking to work together and leverage their respective multi-hundred million user bases. The blogosphere is reporting that Skype and Facebook are in advanced discussions about integrating their respective services for a variety of communications tools

According to the All Things Digital blog, “Facebook and Skype are poised to announce a significant and wide-ranging partnership that will include integration of SMS, voice chat and Facebook Connect.” The move by Facebook adds fuel to the argument that the social networking giant is looking to transform its platform into a “… central communications and messaging platform for its users …”

Facebook is also rumored to be working on a mobile phone, or maybe just a mobile phone operating system to rival Android and maybe even Apple.

Facebook is in a unique position. In relatively short order, it’s created a global brand that hundreds of millions interact with on a weekly basis. If they’re successful (and it’s a big ‘If ‘ in my opinion) in leveraging that engagement into a viable communications platform (both broadband and mobile based), look out.
