They don’t have the Sunday NFL Ticket, but that’s not stopping Verizon from trying to leverage football for competitive advantage. Yesterday, they announced the launch of the FiOS Football app for the iPad.

The FiOS Football for iPad mobile app features “… football-related stats, news and content, including player information, team stats and live scores from across the league, as well as access to the NFL RedZone channel. Customers are required to be both FiOS TV and FiOS Internet subscribers (and NFL Red Zone subscribers for that feature). The app is only accessible via Wi-Fi within the FiOS powered home.

Add that feature to their recently introduced FiOS high school football programming and the launch of the Longhorn Network and you can see the perceived power that Verizon believes football brings to their channel line-up.

It’s a good example of how service providers are leveraging content, the digital home, and new media to build incremental value for their monthly subscriptions.
