Verizon will be offering high definition television (HDTV) video on demand (VOD) sometime in the near future hinted CTO Mark Wegleitner at the NXTcomm show. Wegleitner didn’t offer a specific timetable for an HD VOD launch, but did say it was coming and could be achieved technically today.
Verizon execs are smiling because this type of offering helps support their expensive decision to go with a FTTH architecture. The FTTH strategy affords them the ability to pursue a high intensive bandwidth application like HD VOD. It also conceivably gives them a competitive advantage, especially over DBS competitors who can’t match an HD VOD experience any time soon.
