Providers looking for new models for offering video services to their subscribers may be interested in learning about FuboTV’s new strategy.
The sports-first, live-TV streaming platform company announced this week that it will sell standalone premium subscription services with no base channel plan necessary. Standalone options offering both live and on-demand content include FanDuel Sports Network (formerly Bally Sports Network), Paramount+ with Showtime, and NBA League Pass. These are in addition to current package options.
A subscription to a standalone video service also enables a subscriber to receive Fubo Free, which includes approximately 200 free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels.
Fubo said the new video services are central to its Super Aggregation strategy. The company wants to appeal to customers with a host of flexible content bundles “from skinny to fat, at different price points, all within the Fubo ecosystem,” it said. In fact, Fubo promises more standalone subscription offerings, both live linear and SVOD, to come.
“Our vision to be a Super Aggregator aims to give consumers a seamless way to access all of the content they love within the Fubo ecosystem and at appropriate price points. With the addition of standalone live and SVOD premium subscriptions, we believe offering multiple bundles, from skinny to fat, will put choice in the hands of our customers. This is what streaming should be,” said Fubo Co-founder and CEO David Gandler.
Fubo also described the company’s three different channel plan tiers:
- Fubo Free: A free tier of FAST channels available to former Fubo paid and free-trial subscribers, in addition to premium video service subscribers.
- Premium Subscription Services: Including both live linear and SVOD, these video services can be purchased as standalones and without purchasing the main Fubo product. Fubo is also exploring the launch of other content offerings, such as pay-per-view (PPV), transactional video on demand (TVOD), and skinny bundles.
- Virtual MVPD: Fubo’s signature vMVPD channel plans aggregate the top in live sports, news and entertainment, as well as a robust VOD offering.
A recent J.D. Power study showed that satisfaction for streaming services ranked higher than cable and satellite across all seven dimensions of the study, particularly in value for price paid.
