More than 20 million Comcast customers will get upgrades, receiving enhanced Xfinity internet speeds at no extra charge, Comcast announced today.
Both Xfinity internet tiers and the NOW prepaid products will contain upload speeds that are 50% to 100% faster. This will enable quick uploads of large files when working remotely or the sharing of videos on social media in seconds, the company said. Most internet tiers also will see improved download speeds.
Beyond speed upgrades, Xfinity said it would now offer new and existing customers a year of Unlimited on Xfinity Mobile when they sign up for a 400 Mbps or higher plan. Additionally, with WiFi PowerBoost, Xfinity Mobile and Comcast Business Mobile users benefit from seamless Wi-Fi speeds of up to 1 Gbps, regardless of their Internet tier.
Emily Waldorf, senior vice president of Consumer Products, Comcast Connectivity and Platforms, said about the enhancement: “Because 90 percent of Xfinity Mobile Internet traffic travels over Wi-Fi, not cellular, this combination of products delivers a faster internet and mobile experience and hundreds of dollars of savings to customers.”
Comcast said that its “comprehensive connectivity experience” includes not only fast download and upload speeds, but also:
- Reliability: Xfinity claims greater than 99% reliability.
- Ultra-low lag: Comcast recently introduced the first customers in the world to a new feature of Xfinity internet that radically reduces latency when using interactive applications. Details of the research and development that went into this effort were announced in January.
- Great Wi-Fi in and out of the home furthered by next-generation Xfinity gateways and WiFi PowerBoost that delivers speeds up to 1 Gbps over Wi-Fi at home or at millions of Wi-Fi hotspots.
- Digital Security: xFi Advanced Security protects connected devices from malware and other threats at the gateway before they reach connected household devices. It is included for free for customers who lease an Xfinity gateway.
