Among large cable MSOs, Charter may be slightly behind the curve in their transition to DOCSIS 3.0. That’s about to change. On their 1Q10 earnings conference call, they revealed plans to roll DOCSIS 3.0 service to 50% of their systems by year end 2010.

Their most notable current D3 market is St. Louis, where they offer the referenced 60 Mb/s tier. I assume similar speed offers will be made in the new D3 markets, but that’s subject to change.

I also assume this expanded D3 footprint will bring faster broadband speeds to existing Charter broadband customers at no additional charge. They’ve implemented this tactic in other markets, where current broadband customers at 5, 10, and 20 Mb/s in the downstream direction were bumped to 8, 16, and 25 Mb/s respectively. It’s a tactic offered by other cable MSOs as well.
