Internet set-top boxes (iSTBs) are present in 1 of 5 (21 percent) U.S. broadband households, an increase of 63 percent in the last year and 13 percent percent above that early last year, according to a new analysis from TDG (The Diffusion Group) entitled, ¨The In-Home CE and Home Network Ecosystem, 2015.¨
Twenty million U.S. households are using iSTBs to stream online TV services, Michael Greeson, founder and director of research at TDG, highlighted. “As Apple prepares to launch its new Internet set-top box, it does so knowing demand for such platforms have significant headroom, and will be driven by not only greenfield purchases, but multi-unit and replacement sales, as well.”
Internet Set-Top Box Penetration
Internet STBs are especially popular among young U.S. adults 25-44, 3 in 10 (29 percent) of whom have one at home. Just 1 in 5 Late Millennials (18-24) use iSTBs, with users more likely to use video game consoles rather than newer platforms to stream TV content.
