Charter Communications’ Spectrum unit has begun deployment of its next-generation Advanced Wi-Fi 7 routers, the company announced today.
The company said that the Wi-Fi 7 technology solution, exclusively designed and developed for its residential and business customers, is the first to be deployed by a major broadband service provider.
The Wi-Fi 7 technology uses additional spectrum capacity in the 6 GHz band for high-bandwidth, next-generation applications that typitcally need faster data throughput and connections with lower latency. The newest Wi-Fi technology provides enhanced network management, device control, security and router capabilities compared to earlier versions of WiFi, according to the company.
Spectrum’s new Wi-Fi routers will provide:
- Integrated cloud-based security designed to protect customers and their devices from online threats with enhanced network security at no additional cost.
- The Speed Boost feature, designed to provide seamless, secure, and fast connectivity with speeds up to 1 Gbps for Spectrum mobile devices.
- The Spectrum Mobile Managed Wireless Network, a dedicated Wi-Fi network for visitors that automatically connects their Spectrum mobile devices, delivering secure connectivity with speeds up to 1 Gbps.
The Wi-Fi 7 routers are to be deployed initially to new and upgrading Spectrum internet Gig residential and business customers based on availability, with plans to expand distribution in the coming months. Spectrum began its deployment to customers in Greensboro, North Carolina earlier this month.
“With the introduction of our Wi-Fi 7 routers, Spectrum continues to lead the way in bringing cutting-edge technology to our customers,” said Charter Communications Executive Vice President, Product, Danny Bowman in the announcement.
“These new routers are designed to support the ever-increasing number of connected devices in homes and businesses, delivering faster speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity to handle the most demanding digital activities. Additionally, Wi-Fi 7’s ability to support multi-gigabit speeds ensures our routers will be ready for future Spectrum innovation.”
The deployment marks Charter’s second recent effort to improve the customer experience for their Spectrum customers. In September, the company announced a series of changes to its services related to “customer commitment,” including lowering some prices, introducing service guarantees, and promising no annual contracts.
