AT&T Announces Agreements with Open-Access Fiber Providers

Earlier this week, AT&T Fiber announced agreements with four open-access companies — Boldyn Networks, Digital Infrastructure Group, PRIME FiBER, and Ubiquity — that operate outside its footprint.

Boldwyn Networks serves a number of industries with special focus on the U.S. Armed Forces. It provides network infrastructure for more than 75 bases nationwide and across all branches of the military. The agreement builds on an existing agreement under which AT&T will modernize Boldwyn’s open-access communications infrastructure at military bases with fiber, FirstNet, and 5G.

Digital Infrastructure Group is a wholesale fiber developer and operator. It is active in the U.S. — where it is expanding — and Canada.

PRIME FiBER is backed by InLight Capital. It is a new company that serves ISPs, infrastructure consolidators and enterprises in the United States. The work with open-access provider PRIME FiBER grows out of AT&T’s prior relationship with Prime Communications.

Ubiquity operates what AT&T says is one of the nation’s largest commercial open-access networks. The agreement will enable AT&T to serve private access locations such as multifamily communities and private homeowners’ associations (HOAs) nationwide. The company “will also build exclusive greenfield areas for AT&T, initially in Minnesota,” the announcement said.

“AT&T is America’s largest and leading fiber provider,” said AT&T CEO John Stankey. “With our organic fiber build, we’re seeing improving returns as we expand our network. In new service areas, Gigapower is ramping well, and we’re targeting additional geographies for growth with the joint venture and other commercial open-access agreements. Customers tell us they want a high-performance wireless and broadband experience from a single provider, and AT&T is best positioned to serve this growing need.”

In April, Gigapower, a joint venture between AT&T and Blackrock, said that it is expanding its open-access fiber network in Eatontown, Florida. The network is a wholesale platform that hosts ISPs and other businesses.
