Growing demand for mobile data from new, in-vehicle entertainment services such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will generate lots of new cellular M2M data traffic, according to a new M2M traffic forecast from Juniper Research.
In fact, in-vehicle entertainment services will account for as much as 98% of all M2M data traffic over the next five years, according to Juniper’s M2M: Strategies & Opportunities for MNOs, Service Providers & OEMs 2016-2021.
In-vehicle Internet radio, music streaming applications and information services will generate some 6,000 PB (petabytes) per annum by 2021, the equivalent of more than 300 billion hours of streaming music, Juniper highlights in a press release. Equipped with 4G SIMs, connected vehicles will connect over the air to service and subscription updates for both drivers and passengers, Juniper adds.
M2m Traffic Forecast
Mobile M2M network technology and data streams will form the cornerstone of ongoing autonomous vehicle development, according to Juniper. M2M will enable cellular vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) sensing and data communication.
Wireless network operators need to keep abreast of developments so as to ensure their networks have the capacity to support the resulting increase in cellular and mobile data traffic. That’s especially the case in urban areas, while smart city initiatives, which may include smart parking and smart intersections traffic management, will drive mobile network usage higher still.
Expanding use of M2M technology and cellular data communications is a welcome development for traditional telecom providers whose voice and messaging revenues and profit margins are diminishing, research author Sam Barker pointed out.
¨Operators are now champing at the bit to capitalize on the growth of M2M,” he said.
Juniper cautions that in order to maximize M2M revenue opportunities, network operators will need to do more than provide connectivity by offering value-added services to their customers, however.
