Comcast’s Xfinity Mobile introduced two new wireless plans last week — Mobile Plus and Mobile Select — aimed at giving customers premium features without hidden fees. The Mobile Plus plan features lifetime device protection, “anytime” device upgrades, and a Global Travel Pass. The company calls the combination of features an industry first.
Historically, device protection has been offered as an optional, time-of-purchase add-on with ongoing monthly fees. Under the Mobile Plus plan, it is included at no additional cost for both Xfinity Mobile-purchased devices and bring-your-own devices.
The announcement said Mobile Select is designed for customers who want essential features with unlimited data, global travel access, and fast speeds.
Like other providers, the company is also making a price play. Pricing for the new Xfinity Mobile plans reflects a meaningful shift from previous plans. Mobile Select is $30 per line and includes unlimited talk, text, and 50GB of high-speed data, replacing a previous unlimited plan that cost $40 for only 30GB. Mobile Plus is $45 per line.
“For too long, wireless customers have had to choose between paying more for premium features or settling for less; that’s exactly what Mobile Plus and Mobile Select are here to change,” said Comcast Xfinity Senior Vice President of Consumer Product Marketing Kohposh Kuda in the announcement. “We created these plans to give customers greater simplicity and flexibility.”
In the announcement, Xfinity Mobile claimed that customers who switch from one of the three major carriers could cut their mobile bill in half.
Both plans are available to new and existing Xfinity customers.
The launch is the latest move by Comcast to leverage its broadband footprint to compete aggressively in wireless. The company has been tying mobile and internet services more tightly together — as seen when Comcast upgraded internet speeds for 20 million customers and included a free year of unlimited Xfinity Mobile last year.
