Xfinity introduces same-day Wi-Fi with equipment delivery

Comcast’s Xfinity is providing same-day Wi-Fi equipment to new customers in 20 select cities beginning today, with plans to roll out the same offer to other Xfinity markets by early next year.

Users can have Wi-Fi equipment delivered directly to their home or pick it up from one of Xfinity’s 700 physical stores across the country the same day that they sign up. Delivery is currently available in Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and San Francisco, California.

The Xfinity app is designed to enable customers to set up the company’s Wi-Fi Gateway, to immediately connect devices, personalize their WiFi settings, and manage their home network.

Even before picking up the equipment, they can avail themselves of the Xfinity network of hotspots, which now numbers around 2.3 million.

“In a world where almost everything is instant, home Internet shouldn’t be an exception,” said Eric Jagher, Comcast Xfinity senior vice president of connectivity, said in a prepared statement. “With Xfinity’s same-day WiFi we’ve giving customers access to the nation’s fastest, most reliable connectivity the moment they need it.”

The announcement comes shortly after Xfinity topped the recent OpenSignal leaderboard for converged networks in two of three categories. The Comcast subsidiary led in consistent quality — a metric that measured how reliably a network supports HD video, group video calls, and gaming — with a combined score of 83.9%, less than a percentage point ahead of Verizon. Xfinity also won for combined download speed at 247.1 Mbps, narrowly ahead of Spectrum at 240.1 Mbps and AT&T at 233.3 Mbps.
