WOW! Internet, Cable & Phone, which divested some high profile systems last year, said that it is investing $60 million in an all-IP fiber network in Seminole County, FL. WOW! currently serves Pinellas County and Panama City, FL. The company said it is the first market in its Greenfield strategy to build to new markets not adjacent to existing networks.
The cable MSO reports that the Seminole County network eventually will pass 60,000 locations. WOW!, which says that it already has started the project, will offer subscribers access to multi-gigabit data services, home and business Wi-Fi and WOW! tv+, its IP video service.
“We are excited to announce Seminole County as the first service area to kick off our Greenfield initiative,” WOW! CEO Teresa Elder said in a press release. “We are delighted to offer communities in Seminole County a better broadband choice so they can work, learn and be entertained using WOW!’s multi-Gig fiber-to-the-home network. Area residents and businesses will be pleasantly surprised by our reliable network, super-fast speeds and choice of exceptional products to meet their broadband usage needs.”
Last June, WOW! sold systems in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and Maryland for $1.786 billion.
The press release on those deals quoted Elder, who said that the moves would reduce the company’s debt and enable its “broadband-first strategy” that includes greenfield initiatives and the expansion of commercial services.
WOW! passes 1.9 million residential, business and wholesale customers in the Midwest and Southeast. States it serves include Michigan, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia.
