Windstream announced the closing of their acquisition of NuVox. With the acquisition, Windstream gains 90,000 business customers across a 16 state footprint in the Southeast and Midwest. NuVox is based in Greenville, South Carolina.

The deal was valued at approximately $650 million. With NuVox, Windstream has greatly expanded their SMB and Enterprise market, which is part of an announced diversification strategy to lessen their dependency on residential local phone service. “NuVox is a great strategic fit for Windstream. The NuVox markets are contiguous to our properties, and the transaction bolsters our strategy to focus more on the business customer,” said Jeff Gardner, Windstream president and CEO. According to Windstream, business and broadband revenues now represent more than half of Windstream’s annual revenues of approximately $3.7 billion on a pro forma basis, which includes the acquisitions of NuVox, Lexcom and D&E Communications.

No word on whether Windstream will keep the NuVox brand, or absorb it into Windstream. For NuVox, its business as usual, for now.
