In a New Hampshire deal, TDS Telecommunications is purchasing the fiber and voice operations from Granite State Communications. It’s a bit of a switch: For the past couple of years, TDS has been on the selling side of the equation.
TDS Telecommunications, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems, Inc., will gain more than 11,000 fiber service addresses once the acquisition of Granite State Communications is complete. The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of the year.
“This acquisition marks an exciting step forward in our mission to deliver world-class connectivity with an excellent customer experience,” TDS Telecom Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs Drew Petersen said in the announcement. “By welcoming Granite State Communications into the TDS family, we are not only expanding our fiber network but also strengthening our commitment to the New Hampshire communities we serve.”
Granite State Communications traces its roots all the way back to 1877. It once consisted of four phone companies: The Chester Telephone Company, the Sandown Telephone Company, the Weare Telephone Company and the Triangle Telephone Company.
The acquisition of Granite State Communications comes as TDS has gone through a period of downsizing:
- Last July, it agreed to sell its network in Oklahoma to Hilliary Communications. The deal covered almost 35,000 addresses.
- In April 2025, TDS and the Eastern Slope Rural Telephone Association entered into a stock purchase agreement under which ownership of the Strasburg Telephone Company was to move from TDS to Eastern Slope.
- The previous month, broadband service provider RiverStreet announced that it would acquire TDS assets in North Carolina, Virginia, and three other states.
- In February 2025, TDS agreed to a stock purchase agreement under which fiber provider Elevate would acquire TDS operations and assets serving more than 16,000 subscribers in Delta and Montrose counties Colorado. Elevate is a subsidiary of the Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA).
- In August 2024, TDS entered into a purchase agreement under which Poka Lambro Telecommunications LTD and Nevill Holdings Inc. were to gain control of five TDS Telecommunications cable properties in Texas.
