According to a FirstNet progress report from AT&T and the First Responder Network Authority, construction of state radio access networks and the core network that will interconnect them is underway. AT&T said the network eventually will reach 95% of the U.S. population.

As a local exchange carrier in 20 states, AT&T has a dense fiber footprint, as well as a nationwide fiber network — and that could provide a competitive edge for 5G backhaul. The company also will deploy fiber to 7 million new locations.
