Skype continues its multi-platform quest to enable its communications experience anywhere, anytime with the news skype is now available for the iPad. Skype users can now complete video calls, instant messaging, skype calling (requires skype credit), and SMS texting on the most popular tablet platform on the globe.

The skype video chat function on the iPad is of particular note since Apple likes to push people towards its own Facetime video calling app on their devices. The move expands skype’s sphere of influence across the digital lifestyle, including access on Apple devices (including the Mac), Android devices, and increasingly on connected TVs in the digital home.

“The large iPad screen is perfect for bringing Skype video calls to life, in either landscape or portrait view, and because it is on the iPad, Skype video calls can be made at the beach, in a car or even lying on a couch,” skype notes on their blog.

By adding skype capability, the iPad adds even more value to its role as the hub of a digital lifestyle. You can access the web, watch TV and video, make calls (video or otherwise), instant message, and do just about any digital task you care to with it. For skype (and Microsoft by extension), the  move helps them pursue the goal of becoming the preferred communications platform for the digital and broadband age.
