June 1, 2010 – Sioux Falls based SDN Communications recently lit a direct fiber optic path from Sioux Falls to Minneapolis’ The Minnesota Gateway, a telecom hub or what’s known in the industry as a carrier hotel.
The fiber route will offer 800 Gigabit connections for businesses in Sioux Falls, Minneapolis, Luverne, Worthington, and Windom. Businesses in smaller Minnesota communities along the fiber route will also be able to utilize the service through SDN’s partnerships with independent telephone companies along the route.
The Sioux Falls-Minneapolis connection complements the fiber paths SDN has been building in southwest Minnesota.
“There are a number of businesses that have offices in both Sioux Falls and Minneapolis,” says SDN Communications CEO Mark Shlanta. “This fiber route offers them an option to use SDN Communications as a single, reliable provider to reach branch locations.”
SDN is also expanding into Marshall and Pipestone, MN. Eventually that route will connect to the Minneapolis fiber, creating a ringed, protected route for greater reliability.
Beyond South Dakota and Minnesota, SDN has connectivity into Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming. Expansions currently under construction will put SDN into Denver, CO and Billings, MT later this year. SDN and its member owners have a network of more than 22,000 miles of fiber.
