Press Release

Oakland, CA — December 14, 2011 — Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZHNE), a global leader in FTTx network access solutions, today announced a new MXK™ deployment with Central Oklahoma Telephone Company, an independent local exchange company headquartered in Davenport, OK. The companies are building a fiber network to support fast delivery of more affordable and reliable high-speed Internet access, VoIP and video services to both residential and business subscribers in Davenport, OK.

As of October 2011, Central Oklahoma Telephone Company residential subscribers are transitioning to a higher quality media experience. The unmatched flexibility and scalability of the Zhone MXK platform and its ability to provide Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) connectivity in facilitating network and service upgrades to FTTH has been repeatedly demonstrated in similar broadband projects throughout the United States.

“Zhone’s MXK multi-service access platform and its RF-video capable zNID™ ONTs combined to deliver flawless RF video, voice and broadband data to our customers in Davenport,” exclaimed Steve Guest, president of Central Oklahoma Telephone Company. “After in-depth review of various platforms, we chose Zhone’s MXK platform for the increased density, scale and performance to address our network needs. Zhone’s EZ Touch Provisioning™ system for FTTH greatly simplifies the installation of ONTs in our network. Zhone’s ability to integrate with our new billing system promises smooth implementation of our network expansion plans. ”

“This new fiber network allows Central Oklahoma Telephone Company to expand its existing CATV network and provide advanced communications and connectivity to its residential and business customers across their coverage area,” explained Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. “Service providers like Central Oklahoma Telephone Company value the core functionalities of the MXK, including flexibility, scalability and ease of use; service providers globally continue to recognize it as one of the leading solutions for FTTH deployments and we are pleased to expand MXK deployment in the Oklahoma region.”

Zhone has extensive experience managing the complexity of multi-service access and, as a result, has built the telecom industry’s most comprehensive portfolio of scalable FTTx solutions. The MXK’s feature set aligns well with Central Oklahoma Telephone Company’s specific field requirements, enabling Zhone to provide optimum cost efficiency and maximum service differentiation in the operator’s network in combination with the zNID Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) that will be installed at the residence and business sites to support individual subscriber service needs.

To date, Zhone has deployed more than 2,600 of its fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP MXK platforms with more than 150 service providers in more than 40 countries globally.
