Motorola and T-Mobile partner to provide satellite connectivity for first responders

Motorola Solutions and T-Mobile are teaming up to connect Motorola Solutions’ APX NEXT smart radio via satellite.

The radios are designed to work across land mobile radio (LMR), 5G, and Wi-Fi. Now they can also use T-Priority from T-Mobile and T-Satellite with Starlink’s low Earth orbit (LEO) direct-to-cell satellite network for extended connectivity.

According to the companies, the satellite connectivity will bring first responders more capacity and faster speeds.

Motorola Solutions has deployed more than 13,000 two-way radio networks globally, as well as more than 500 broadband push-to-talk deployments with more than 1.3 million users worldwide.

The satellite access from T-Mobile and Starlink extends the connectivity of Motorola Solutions’ AI, Assist, and SVX — a body-worn AI assistant, remote speaker microphone, and body camera that pairs with APX NEXT. This helps first responders maintain hands-free access to essential voice and data services.

“We’re proud to work with T-Mobile to seamlessly broaden the reach of first responders’ trusted communication lifeline — their radios,” said Mahesh Saptharishi, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Motorola Solutions, in a prepared statement.

“This level of real-time resilient connectivity advances our vision to put the power of human-AI interaction —increasingly a need-to-have for public safety workflows — into the hands of every first responder in the U.S.”

T-Mobile’s satellite network performed well during a recent Ookla’s Speedtest report. And, like the partnership with Motorola, T-Mobile is used to sharing its satellite network. AT&T customers accounted for around a third of all T-Satellite connections during the 10-month
