Midco has been quietly planning to launch mobile service this year, joining the ranks of cable companies offering a broadband and mobile service bundle.
Midco will offer mobile service as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). Although they have not named a partner network yet, a representative from Midco told Telecompetitor, “Midco Mobile will provide customers access to a trusted, nationwide 5G network that our network engineers extensively researched to ensure the best possible experience.”
This week, the company announced two vendors to support the service: Telgoo5 and BlueConnects.
Midco President and Chief Operating Officer Ben Dold said, “We are thrilled to begin a new chapter in Midco history as we prepare to deliver premier mobile services to our customers with Telgoo5 and BlueConnects… With the announcement of these new relationships, we’re telling our customers: We hear you, we want to continue to serve you and Midco Mobile is on track for a 2025 launch.”
Telgoo5’s cloud-based platform streamlines billing and operational support for telecommunications service providers like Midco. It empowers these providers to handle customer accounts, billing, online charging, and various other services efficiently, all within a unified system. It has more than 20 years of experience serving the telecommunications sector.
BlueConnects will operate as Midco’s mobile virtual network aggregator, expanding Midco’s business to include access to “the nation’s largest and most trusted wireless 5G network,” Midco said in a press release.
Midco is following several other cable internet providers into the realm of mobile service:
- Breezeline, a subsidiary of Cogeco Communications, in May 2024 introduced a mobile service within in its video and broadband service footprint. Breezeline President Frank van der Post told Telecompetitor when the service was announced that Breezeline Mobile would be an MVNO on AT&T’s network, but that the service would be developed for Breezeline by the NCTC.
- Broadband provider WOW! announced plans in February 2022 for a mobile offering in partnership with Reach Mobile. The offering, “WOW! mobile powered by Reach,” relies on the T-Mobile network. At the time of launch, WOW! said the mobile offering would not require a contract and when purchased in combination with the company’s broadband service customers could save up to $10 a month.
In late 2021, the cable industry’s research and development lab, CableLabs, said it had formed a working group to examine hybrid-MVNO options for combined service offerings. Specifically, the lab would look at combining the Wi-Fi and 4G/5G networks that cable companies own with mobile networks that the cable companies use, but which are owned by mobile network operators.
