Yesterday, LOGIX Fiber Networks — which serves Texas — said it had deployed a multi-terabit wavelength route for an enterprise client. The network enables scalable connectivity between Houston, Austin, Dallas, and Fort Worth. LOGIX declined to identify the client.
LOGIX said that its network spans more than 300,000 fiber miles and connects to thousands of enterprise locations and more than 80 data centers in the Lonestar State.
The dramatic increase in demand for networking capacity caused by AI, cloud computing, and other quickly growing and time-sensitive fiber-based products and services is causing network operators like LOGIX to aggressively expand their networks.
For example, in May Midco and Switch announced a five-year agreement to provide broadband infrastructure to support AI demand for AI in Ellendale, North Dakota. The five-year agreement will feature a 200-terabit network supporting more than 500 individual 400 Gbps circuits traversing two diverse routes between Ellendale and Chicago.
In another May announcement similar to the LOGIX announcement, regional backbone technology providers DCN, Range, and WIN Technology said that they will jointly invest in the Heartland Fiber Project, a long-haul fiber network designed to increase network capacity, resiliency and flexibility to support AI hyperscale data center development in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The project eventually will support high-speed communications between Denver and Chicago.
The demand shows no sign of plateauing. Late last month, the Vertical Systems Group released research predicting that there will be more than 2 million fiber-lit buildings in the U.S. by the end of the year. The firm also said that by the end of 2025 more than 36% of the nation’s commercial buildings and data centers were fiber-lit.
