The latest Robocall Index, a report that summarizes January 2025 robocalls, identified some pronounced increases in call volume.
In January 2025, consumers received slightly more than 4.7 billion robocalls — an approximate 9.3% increase year-over-year compared with January 2024’s 4.3 billion calls. Volume is also 9% higher than that logged during the previous month of December 2024.
The Robocall Index data is generated by YouMail, an app that helps consumers avert unwanted and dangerous calls, texts, and voicemails.
When the month is broken down, the report said January averaged 152.9 million robocalls per day and 1,769 robocalls per second, up 8.7% from December’s averages.
YouMail CEO Alex Quilici referenced the TRACED (Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence) ACT, which provides the FCC with tools to fight unwanted robocalls.
“Robocall volume seems to be continuing to trend higher once again,” Quilici said in the January report. “While things are noticeably better since the TRACED ACT passed, especially the big decline in scam calls, it’s clear that the TRACED ACT did not solve the problem, and robocallers are finding ways to get their calls on the network.”
Quilici’s comments parallel those in a robocall report issued recently by Transaction Network Services. It said that while top carriers have made progress in robocall mitigation through successful implementation of signed traffic and other means, non-top carriers’ networks remain at serious risk for bad actors launching unwanted robocall campaigns.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently vacated a rule that would have drastically reduced telemarketing robocalls received by consumers and small businesses.
According to the YouMail report, every category of robocall — notifications, payment reminders, telemarketing and scams — rose last month.
Scam calls alone jumped 40% in January. The most problematic robocall campaign involved pre-approved personal loans, which the YouMail report said generated more than 100 million calls originating from hundreds of thousands of different phone numbers.
Telemarketing calls also increased, by 9% compared with December. Together, scam and telemarketing calls added up to nearly 2.6 billion robocalls for the month, comprising about 54% of all robocalls in January. Payment reminders increased 4.5%, and other notifications increased only 0.4%.
