Hosted PBX and SIP trunking remain the most obvious new revenue sources for service providers providing IP telephony services, says Martin Taylor, Metaswitch Networks SVP. But it is likely that business-focused smartphone servcies that integrate with the fixed-line IP telephony system will be an important next step, at the very least extending enterprise telephony features into the mobile realm.

To support that trend, MetaSwitch now supports a uniform way of creating a smartphone app and publish on a mobile app store. It dramatically reduces the overhead of creating and deploying mobile app store products, Taylor says.

“The rapid rise of smartphone penetration now means we have to think about the handy tools we can put into smartphones that allow people to interact with wireline services,” Taylor says. “When you can run over the top VOIP, that creates huge opportunities for wireline operators.”
