Google Fiber has upped the top speed of its Huntsville, AL network to 5 Gbps. The symmetrical offering is priced at $125 per month.

The offer includes a Wi-Fi 6 router, one or two mesh extenders, a 10 Gigabit Fiber Jack and professional installation.

Google says that subscribers electing to stay with the 1 Gbps service who currently use their network boxes as their router can upgrade to a Wi-Fi 6 router at no additional cost. This can increase speeds as much as 30%. A higher level of home control can be attained through the Google Fiber app.

Google Fiber’s involvement with Huntsville dates back to early 2016. At that time, the company entered into a public-private partnership with Huntsville Utilities to bring gigabit speeds to the high-tech portions of the city.

Google Fiber said that Huntsville Utilities would be primarily or even fully responsible for building the network. Huntsville Utilities began exploring a gigabit network two years earlier.

That’s not all that’s going on in the Volunteer State for Google Fiber.

On August 31, the company was approved for a license agreement in Murfreesboro. The network design phase is starting now, with construction slated to begin early 2024. Subscribers will begin getting service later in the year.
