DSL Extreme announced their new FTTH product, Fiber Extreme. Fiber Extreme is actually a rebranded Verizon FiOS product. DSL Extreme is a California based ISP that offers a variety of broadband and Internet services. BroadbandReports.com reports that DSL Extreme is the first major ISP to strike a resale deal with Verizon for FiOS. Fiber Extreme appears to be available across much of Verizon’s FiOS footprint. The service is priced significantly lower than Verizon’s service, causing speculation about low profit margins.
Will reselling FTTH service work? It certainly allows for competitive ISPs to get into the FTTH business much quicker than they could on their own (if they could at all). But as a general rule, reselling won’t show up in the ‘great business hall of fame.’ Companies like DSL Extreme have obviously built a respectable business on resale – so have many others. Will have to wait and see if that relative success can translate to FTTH.
