Press Release

December 08, 2014  — RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif – Cox Communications has launched 1 gigabit speeds at the Irvine Company’s Park Place Apartment Homes in Irvine, making its residents the first in Southern California to have access to gigabit speeds for their residential Internet service.

Gigabit speeds are 100 times faster than the average broadband and enable customers to:

  • Run all of their devices at the same time (laptops, tablets, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming systems)
  • Download an HD movie in less than 60 seconds;
  • Download 100 songs in three seconds;
  • Upload about 1,000 photos in about a minute.

Located at Jamboree Road and Michelson Drive, Park Place Apartment Homes is Irvine’s newest apartment community offering contemporary living and a sophisticated, walkable lifestyle. The community features bright, open apartment living spaces with a range of floor plans, from studios to two-bedroom apartment homes with a den.

Earlier this year, Cox Communications announced that it would bring 1 gigabit speeds to residential customers in all of its markets by the end of 2016. The company has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than 10 years, and launched gigabit speeds to residential customers in Phoenix in October.

“Cox already offers the fastest residential Internet in Orange County, and with the launch at Park Place Apartment Homes, we’re the first provider in Southern California to offer 1 gigabit speeds to residential customers,” said Dave Bialis, Senior Vice President and Region Manager for Cox Communications in California. “As technology continues to advance and change how consumers use broadband, Cox will be well positioned to serve our customers in the future.”

“Having Southern California’s fastest Internet service is part of the exceptional living experience found at Park Place Apartment Homes,” said David Brackett, senior vice president of property management for Irvine Company Apartment Communities. “The community’s extensive onsite amenities and nearby shopping, dining, employment and recreation complement the lifestyles of our residents, while gigabit Internet service provides the speed and versatility they desire to work and enjoy entertainment online.”

The 1 gigabit offering comes on the heels of Cox doubling its Internet speeds in October for California customers in its most popular tiers. Cox High-Speed Internet Preferred tier customer speeds increased from 25 megabits per second to 50 megabits per second and Premier tier customer speeds increased from 50 megabits per second to 100 megabits per second. In addition, Ultimate tier speeds increased from 100 megabits per second to 150 megabits per second. These tiers represent more than 75% of Cox Internet customers in California. Over the past 13 years, Cox has increased broadband speeds 1,000%.
