Spectrum Wi-Fi Internet Security

Charter has introduced Security Shield, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based cybersecurity product for its Spectrum Advanced WiFi customers.

Security Shield, which is available across the service provider’s 41-state footprint, is designed to protect users against security threats and to provide “enhanced network visibility” to users.

The product detects and blocks malicious websites, phishing scams and Internet-originated attacks against home devices, the company says. The My Spectrum App tells subscribers which devices are connected to their home network and advises subscribers about threats that have been detected and blocked by Security Shield.

Security Shield is the latest security addition to the Spectrum Advanced WiFi platform. The platform features customer-managed WPA2 network credentials, new device onboarding notifications and the ability to manage device connectivity through grouping, access scheduling and pausing.

“Internet security has never been more important and Security Shield delivers the protection our customers need for their home network,” Charter’s group vice president of WiFi and connected home products Gary Koerper said in a press release. “This enhancement to Advanced WiFi is the latest in a growing list of features we provide that defend our customers’ networks while providing the visibility and control they want.”

Security of course is a main concern of service providers and their customers. It has become an even bigger issue due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increased work from home (WFH) trend. While many providers have introduced platforms that are enterprise level, many workers still rely on residential networks.

Last month, AT&T introduced Secure Workforce with Check Point, a cloud-based suite of security. The platform was created in partnership with Check Point Software.

Also in June, SilverSky – a firm that offers managed detection and response – and the NRTC announced an agreement to offer cybersecurity services to the organization’s members.

In March, Comcast added features to its xFi premium Wi-Fi offering. xFi Complete provides customers with security protection for mobile devices outside the home and VPN encryption when connecting to unsecured Wi-Fi.
