On average, Americans spend almost $100 per month on mobile phone service, according to a new report from doxo, a bill paying company.
“doxoINSIGHTS’ U.S. Mobile Phone Market Size and Household Spend Report for 2025” found that 88% of U.S. households spent a median of $96 per month, which computes to $1,152 annually.
The report found that annual spending on mobile services is $166 billion, which is about 4% of the $4.55 trillion spent on bills annually.
The press release included the five highest median phone bills for mobile services per state and city.
The top states:
- Nebraska: $136
- Alaska: $125
- Kentucky: $125
- North Dakota: $124
- Montana: $119
The top cities:
- Dallas: $139
- Omaha: $132
- Philadelphia: $113
- Atlanta: $109
- St. Paul: $107
“With mobile phone ownership nearly universal and many households relying solely on smartphones for internet access, choosing a mobile service plan has become a crucial aspect of household budgets. Transparency to market data is key, as consumers have more mobile service choices than ever,” doxo Co-founder and CEO Steve Shivers said in a press release about the mobile report.
doxoINSIGHTS is comprehensive. It aggregates and anonymizes bill payment data from more than 10 million consumers covering 97% of U.S. ZIP codes in 45 biller service categories. The platform includes impact from all income brackets and funding sources.
Before the mobile report, doxo released a similar deep dive on cable and internet spending last month. The firm found that American households spend $164 billion annually on these services. That figure is about 4% of the amount spent on household bills each year, the same percentage that is spent on mobile phone services.
“doxoINSIGHTS Cable & Internet Market Size and Household Spend Report for 2025” found that 73% of U.S. households are paying a cable and internet bill and that the median charge of $121 per month, or $1,452 per year.
