After Astound merger, Google Fiber is now GFiber

Google Fiber has rebranded itself as GFiber, a move that Melani Griffith — GFiber chief growth officer — said reflects the company’s growth into an internet service provider completely focused on creating a customer experience that stands apart.

Writing in the company’s blog, Griffith said the change from Google Fiber to Gfiber recognizes the brand’s personality, citing the company’s recognition by J.D. Power as having the best customer satisfaction for residential wired internet service (south region) for the past three years as well as earning PC Magazine’s readers choice award for the last four years.

Griffith pointed to some of the company’s recent advances, including:

  • Mainstream multi-gig availability: GFiber offers Core 1 Gig, Home 3 Gig, and Edge 8 Gig options
  • Latest tech and set-up at no additional cost: With Wi-Fi 7 included in Home and Edge and mesh extenders placed, and even professionally hardwired depending on your home’s layout
  • A simple, symmetrical, and fair customer experience: Every product comes with the GFiber App, symmetrical download and upload speeds, and a commitment to no contracts, no data caps, all at a price that hasn’t changed since 2012

Griffith promised even more advances in the future, with an improved optical network to keep up with the growth of the internet.

This isn’t the first big news from Google and GFiber this month.

Among the most recent GFiber initiatives has been its combination with Astound Broadband to form a new company majority-owned by investment firm Stonespeak. Alphabet — the parent company of Google — will remain a significant minority shareholder in GFiber.

In the press release announcing the deal, Google said the transaction “advances GFiber’s mission of redefining internet connectivity and represents a major step toward its goal of operational and financial independence.”
