I'm not sure I understand all the hype. We're simply talking about another Linux platform. I know it has the name "Google" attached to it, but is there really anything new here. Check out http://moblin.org/?cid=cim:ggl|opensrc_us_moblin|k9DFE|s

I hope Android leads to handset freedom. I should be able to walk into Best Buy and buy a handset without it being tied to a carrier. The same way I buy a PC today. If Android accomplishes that, god bless them!

Android will have some trouble. I don't see corporate IT departments embracing an open Linux platform. BlackBerry and MS Mobile have a stranglehold there. They will not be welcoming of an open source device. That should limit Android to consumer apps, and not the more lucrative smartphone market.

Looks like it's time to be in the mobile wireless application development business. This is Mobile 2.0 - much the same way innovation in the web has created web 2.0. Look at all of the companies that have sprouted to develop applications for web 2.0. It's about to multiply again.

Combine this effort with the Apple's iPhone, and the promise of the true mobile web experience will soon be a reality. We've seen glimpses of it already, but this effort will really bring it home.
